ASML Guest Lecture
Semiconductor manufacturing in the Age of AI: a story about complexity and transcendence
By Cas Giepmans
Former student at the University of Maastricht - Cas - is a computer scientist at ASML . He will show how easily we forget that our field is the culmination of centuries of technological advancements: the printing press, steam power, electricity, petrochemistry, radio, and now the transistor. So how does one make an impact in our current day and age? At ASML, we would say: 'One nanometer at a time'. However, while the quest to shrink transistor technology is gradually nearing physical limits, the demand for chips is growing exponentially. Our machines that print patterns on silicon need to operate 24/7/52 and when an hour of downtime costs as much as a brand new, self-driving electric vehicle, you need to know how to locate and solve problems as fast as possible.
Improving diagnostics is one of the industry’s key objectives, but diagnosing problems on the world’s most complex machines is difficult. In this industry spotlight, we will explore the world of semiconductor manufacturing, ASML’s place in it and how we are leveraging artificial intelligence to develop novel methods that keep our machines functioning.
